Patriots Drop First Game to Indiana State, 6-5

THE LEAD
No. 16 Dallas Baptist dropped game one of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader to Indiana State, 6-5, at Horner Ballpark.  Tied 3-3 in the top of the seventh, three runs by the Sycamores would be too much to overcome, as the Patriots found themselves on the wrong end of a one-run loss for the third time this season.

For the fourth straight game, DBU (27-8, 8-5) fell behind as Indiana State took a 3-0 lead through the first three innings.  Jacob Hayes put the Sycamores (16-19, 5-8) on the board in the first inning on a solo blast over the right field wall off of Patriot starter, Joseph Shaw.  The home run by Hayes marked the fifth time in the last six games that the Indiana State slugger has hit a round-tripper.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Patriots scratched a run across in each of the next three innings to tie the game.  Daniel Sweet kick-started DBU's comeback with an RBI single in the Patriots' half of the fourth.  Chane Lynch would then even the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the sixth on a double to left-center field that scored Sweet.

Indiana State answered the call though in the seventh, as the Sycamores put the first two runners on base to chase Shaw from the game.  Facing Patriot reliever, Chance Adams, a sacrifice fly by Derek Hannahs plated the go-ahead run, before the major blow was delivered on a two-out two-run single by Connor McClain.

DBU would respond though, as a lead-off double by Drew Turbin in the seventh led to a run and cut the deficit to 6-4.  Indiana State starter, Jeff Degano, was able to work a scoreless eighth inning and then turned the game over to Austin Conway in the ninth.

Nash Knight started the Patriots' ninth with an infield single, followed by a base hit to right by Turbin.  After a pair of ground outs, Conway was able to retire Daniel Salters for the final out on a ground ball that was hit to the right side into the Sycamores' shift versus the left-handed hitter.

DBU HEAD COACH, DAN HEEFNER – ON INDIANA STATE'S SUCCESS WITH TWO OUTS
"They did a great job in those situations today and were able to manufacture runs with two outs, but I thought we put them in those positions as well with walks and hit-batters.  It starts with us having to do a better job of not putting ourselves in those types of situations."
