Wichita State Hands Patriots 10-3 Loss

THE LEAD
A five-run sixth inning broke up a 3-3 tie and helped stake Wichita State to a 10-3 win over No. 9 Dallas Baptist on Friday night at Horner Ballpark.  DBU (40-11, 14-6) managed to collect only five hits on the night and were held hitless over the final four innings in the loss.

After a two-run home run by Ryan Tinkham in the top of the fifth staked Wichita State (24-30, 10-10) to a 3-1 lead, the Patriots responded with two runs of their own, highlighted by a Justin Wall RBI single to knot the game at three apiece.  The RBI was Wall's team-leading 47th of the season and got DBU starter, Cory Taylor, off the hook for the loss.  Taylor worked five solid innings on the hill, allowing three runs, while striking out four.

With the game tied at five in the sixth, DBU reliever, Drew Smith, hit the first batter he faced and then allowed back-to-back singles, including an RBI base-hit by Trey Vickers that put Wichita State back on top.  After Wichita State loaded the bases, Sam Hilliard hit his second home run in the series, as he belted a grand slam over the wall in left center, placing the Shockers in command with an 8-3 lead.

Wichita State would add another run in the eighth on a double by Tinkham and then a solo blast by Bob Arens in the ninth off of Landon Wilson made it 10-3 Shockers.

On the mound for Wichita State, Taylor Goshen silenced the Patriots' lineup for three and one-third innings, before turning the game over to Reagan Biechler and then Taylor Jones, who closed out DBU the rest of the way.
