THE LEADNo. 13 Dallas Baptist burst out to a five-run first inning and cruised to a 12-4 win over UNC Charlotte to take game two and the series over the 49ers at Hayes Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday afternoon. With the win, DBU (35-9) extends their current win streak to six games.Â
Â
Justin Wall continued his monster weekend at the plate with his second home run in as many days and drove in five runs, while
Tagg Duce and
Daniel Sweet joined Wall with three hits each in the 15-hit parade from the Patriot offense.
Â
DBU's five-run first was aided by one error and two hit-batters by Charlotte (17-23) starter, J.D. Prochaska. After
Tagg Duce laced a single to put DBU on top 1-0, the Patriots loaded the bases and made the 49ers pay for the early mistakes.Â
Trooper Reynolds walked to bring in a run, followed by
Nash Knight bringing in a run, after being hit by a pitch. On top 3-0, a double to right center off the bat of
Chane Lynch plated two more Patriot runs.
Â
In the second inning,
Justin Wall blasted a two-run shot over the fence in left center to put the Patriots up 7-0. Wall would be at it again in the third when he roped a double down the left field line, scoring both
Camden Duzenack and
Daniel Sweet.
Â
With a 9-0 lead, DBU starter,
Cory Taylor, allowed his first run of the game in the fourth. Taylor would end up working five innings on the afternoon and surrender just two runs.
Â
After DBU and Charlotte exchanged runs in the fifth, the 49ers cut the Patriot lead to 10-3 in the sixth.Â
Jay Calhoun worked out of jam in the sixth, as the senior righty escaped a bases loaded jam with nobody out to get out of the inning with just one run allowed.
Â
In the top of the seventh, the Patriots added two more runs, as
Justin Wall collected his fifth RBI of the day and ninth of the series with a sacrifice fly to center. Two batters later, a
Tagg Duce double extended DBU's commanding lead to 12-3.
Â
Following a 49ers run in the bottom of the seventh, freshman reliever,
Dalton Higgins worked two scoreless frames to close out the win.Â
Â
DBU HEAD COACH, DAN HEEFNER – ON DANIEL SWEET'S DAY AT THE PLATE"I'm really proud of the way we competed at the plate and I'm especially proud of the job
Daniel Sweet did in the lead-off spot. Not to say that you expect a guy to do what he did today when he's been out the lineup for a good part of the season, but he was one of our top hitters through the preseason and to get him back in the lineup and to see what he's doing is encouraging. He does a great job in the lead-off role because he sees a lot of pitches and doesn't take any swings out of the zone."
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS10 –
Justin Wall has 10 RBI's on the week going back to DBU's win over TCU on Wednesday.
3 – Wall has hit three home runs in the last four games.
9 –
Daniel Salters extended his career-best hit streak to nine games today.
