THE LEAD
The Dallas Baptist University Women's Soccer team defeated No. 23 Colorado State University-Pueblo, 1-0, in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Stermole Stadium in Golden, Colorado.
Kendall Wells scored with 1:13 remaining in the match to lift the Patriots over the Thunderwolves to the second round of the South Central Regional.
DBU had a chance to take a lead at the end of a quiet first half when the Patriots drew a penalty kick in the 44th minute. Lindsey McManus converted the attempt, but the goal was whistled off as a DBU player jumped in the box early. On the retake, McManus' shot hit the left post and her rebound shot went wide left. CSU-Pueblo had their share of chances to take the game, as
Hope Koym was forced to make a diving save in the 79th minute. Koym made nine saves in the match.
In the waning minutes of the game, with the ball bouncing around midfield,
Geneva Martinez collected the loose ball. Martinez initiated a give-and-go before passing it ahead to
Kendall Wells, who was able to chase the ball down and get a foot on it before goalkeeper Alison Darr reached the ball. The ball slowly rolled to the right post, but managed to cross the line and give the Patriots the late lead.
The Thunderwolves threatened in the final minute, earning a free kick just outside the box with 48 seconds remaining. CSU-Pueblo's leading goal scorer, Laikyn Koss, took the attempt, but her shot ricocheted off the bar. DBU's defense held on over the final seconds of the match to earn the victory.
