Poche & Martinson Lead DBU Past No. 24 New Mexico

THE LEAD
DBU won game one of a three-game series at No. 24 New Mexico, 5-2, behind a stellar pitching performance from Colin Poche and Jordan Martinson on Friday night at Santa Ana Star Field in Albuquerque.   Poche worked five innings and allowed just two runs to earn his first career win as a Patriot, while Martinson silenced the Lobos over the final four innings to notch his second save of the year.

DBU (6-3) opened the scoring in the top of the first when Austin Listi laced a double down the left field line off of New Mexico starter, Carson Schneider, and Justin Wall came into score as Jared Mang could not find the handle on the baseball.  In the second, the Patriots added to their lead on an RBI single from Matt Duce that brought home Daniel Sweet.

After a Chris DeVito home run pulled New Mexico (6-2) to within a run of DBU in the bottom of the second, the Patriots responded on a perfectly placed bunt single by Daniel Sweet to score Trooper Reynolds from third.

In the bottom half of the fourth, the Lobos struck again for a run to cut the deficit to 3-2.  On a deep fly ball hit to the gap in left-center, Daniel Sweet made a spectacular diving catch to rob Jared Mang of extra-bases, while Carl Stajduhar trotted home with UNM's second run of the night.  Poche would work out of the jam in the fourth, striking out DeVito and then getting Reece Weber to ground out.

Following Poche's exit after five innings on the mound, freshman Jordan Martinson came out of the pen to hold the Lobos scoreless over the final four innings.  In the eighth, DBU added to their lead when Darick Hall delivered a two-out RBI single off of reliever, Fernando Fernandez.

In the top of the ninth, the Patriots opened up a three-run lead, as Luke Stratman scored on a wild pitch, giving DBU a 5-2 lead.  Martinson closed out the Lobos in their half of the ninth, retiring the side in order for this second four-inning save of the year.
