DBU Completes Series Sweep with 15-0 Win Over Grambling State

THE LEAD
DBU completed the series sweep over Grambling State with a 15-0 win over the Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Horner Ballpark. Tim Millard went 2-for-3 with a career-high five RBI, highlighted by a fifth-inning grand slam. The homerun was one of three for the Patriots in the inning as Jameson Hannah and Luke Bandy also hit roundtrippers.

Jordan Martinson (3-1) earned the win after tossing 5 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just three hits with three strikeouts. Elijah Saunders (2-2) suffered the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.

DBU broke up Saunder's no-hitter in the bottom of the fourth inning as Camden Duzenack reached on a leadoff bunt down the third base line. Following an Austin Listi double, Matt Duce sent a fly ball to center field that allowed Duzenack to put the first run on the board. The Patriots added two more on a throwing error by Saunders and a sac fly from Ray Gaither to take a 3-0 lead through four. Hannah extended the lead to 5-0 with one swing of the bat, blasting a 415' homerun over the center field wall.

Following a walk of Duzenack, Saunders was relieved by Jonathan Reid, who loaded the bases with a second double by Listi and a Matt Duce hit-by-pitch. Tim Millard stepped up to the plate and hit his second career grand slam to blow the game open at 9-0. Four batters later, Bandy came up with two on and blasted his first career homerun, a 435' blast over the left field wall to make it 12-0. In the top of the sixth, Martinson's day came to an end after putting two men on with two outs, handing the duties over to Sean Boyle, who pegged Matthew Fountain to load the bases. Boyle set down Nick Wheeler on strikes to escape the jam.

The Patriots extended their lead to 13-0 in the sixth as Logan Sepanek singled in Matt Duce. After a walk of Garrett Wolforth to load the bases, Reid struck out Camryn Williams before hitting Bandy to bring Millard home, forcing Grambling to go to the bullpen again for Devin Washington. MD Johnson took over for DBU on the mound in the seventh, falling into a bases-loaded situation with one out, but induced a double-play ball to escape the jam. In the bottom of the inning, Millard picked up his fifth RBI of the game with a sac fly to left, scoring Evan Sandmann for a 15-0 advantage.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
 - With his two-double performance on Sunday, Listi tied Drew Holder for fourth all-time with 54 career doubles.
 - DBU scored the most runs in a game since a 17-1 win over Incarnate Word on March 22, 2016.
 - The Patriots' pitching staff recorded their third shutout of the season in the win.

COACH DAN HEEFNER – ON THE MOMENTUM IN THE FIFTH INNING
"Well if you look back, the thing that started it was Camden Duzenack's drag bunt. That's something we've worked on a lot. We need to be more diverse as an offense. Guys' timing wasn't great at the beginning of the game, but he put down a great bunt. I don't know what it is about it, but there's something about a bunt hit that's a momentum thing for a team. I thought we had a lot better at bats after that.

TIM MILLARD - ON HIS APPROACH TO THE GRAND SLAM
"I was just trying to elevate a ball and help the team out. Luckily, that one got caught up in the wind and thankfully blew out of here. I had a lot of good at bats before me that set me up to get a good pitch."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
6 - Sunday marks the sixth time DBU has scored double-digit runs. The Patriots are 6-0 in those games.
55 – The Patriots have combined for 55 runs in the fourth and fifth innings this season.
7 - DBU now has seven multi-homerun games this season.
