Patriots Complete Series Sweep Over Indiana State

THE LEAD
DBU completed the series sweep on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Indiana State at Horner Ballpark on Sunday. MD Johnson (1-2) earned the win after tossing seven innings of scoreless, one-hit baseball with seven strikeouts.

Sycamore starting pitcher Will Kincanon (3-4) suffered the loss after giving up the ballgame's sole run on six hits in six innings of work with seven strikeouts as well. Seth Elledge (8) picked up the four-out save, striking out the final batter to secure the win.

Johnson, who cruised through the first three innings on 37 pitches, set down the final two batters of the third inning on strikes for his third and fourth strikeouts of the day. In the bottom of the frame, DBU loaded the bases after Matt Duce was intentionally walked, but Devlin Granberg grounded out to short to end the rally. ISU snapped Johnson's brief no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the fourth, but was soon retired on a 6-4-3 double play. The Patriots struck first in the bottom of the fifth as Jameson Hannah scored on an infield single up the middle off the bat of Duce, who picked up his team-leading 36th RBI.

After striking out his seventh Sycamore of the afternoon, Johnson induced a pair of groundouts to finish off his sixth 1-2-3 inning of the game. Dalton Higgins came on for the top of the eighth inning in relief of Johnson, allowing back-to-back base hits before Dan Heefner called on his bullpen again for Seth Elledge, who forced a 3-1 putout to end the inning. After Elledge walked the leadoff man in the ninth, Garrett Wolforth erased the runner as he threw out his 7th runner of the season.
