DBU Claims Win Over Cameron With Impressive Comeback

THE RUNDOWN
The Lady Patriots had their third game in the South Central Classic tournament and they were able to take the win from Cameron University in exciting fashion. Just like yesterday's game against Ouachita Baptist, today's game went to five sets, but this time it looked a little different. DBU lost the first two sets of the game, but with their backs against the wall they were able to convincingly win the third set, narrowly winning the fourth, and sealed the deal by winning the last set. Today's game also featured a solid performance by a number of Lady Patriots.

The first set saw the Lady Aggies come out to an early lead on DBU. With help from Lady Aggie Ania Keene and her four kills in the first set the Lady Patriots found themselves down 19-9. From there they couldn't chip at the lead too much before losing the first set 25-18. The Lady Patriots were able to keep things closer in the second set, but a big run from Cameron late in the set allowed them to barely win another set 25-23.

Now DBU finds themselves down 2-0, but they showed in the third set they weren't quite done. The third set remained close most of the way, but great play from Sidnee Jo Fitzpatrick and Alexa Lezak led the way for DBU to take the set without too much trouble 25-16. The fourth set ended up being the most tense. DBU was able to jump out to an early lead, but Cameron came back to tie it up 7-7. From there the two teams went back and forth the rest of the way, but the Lady Patriots prevailed and tied the game up, taking the fourth set 25-21.

Headed into the final set the Lady Patriots had all the momentum after being able to tie the game. Now they just needed to finish the job. The set started out like the last one with no team able to take a big lead. As soon as one team scored a point the other team responded. Then, with DBU leading 8-7, the Lady Patriots scored two points in a row. The Lady Aggies responded by getting the next point, but DBU finished the comeback by scoring the game's final 5 points winning the set 15-8 and winning the game 3-2.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • This is the first time DBU won a game after losing the first two sets since 2012 when they made the comeback on UT-Permian Basin.
  • This year's team is already improving, as they have already hit the same amount of neutral site victories as the 2016 team.
  • This is the second game for team captain, Sidnee Jo Fitzpatrick to lead the team in kills.
