THE RUNDOWN
No. 16 DBU suffered its second loss of the season and first in Heartland Conference play in a 72-70 defeat at Rogers State on Saturday as
JT Harris' potentially game-tying tip-in attempt missed the mark with one second to play.
Neither team led by more than five in the game's final 13:13, a stretch that saw four ties and one lead change.
Chandler Jacobs' layup evened the score at 70 with 25 seconds left, but Baron Smith Jr. made two free throws to secure the final lead for the Hillcats.
Smith Jr. scored a game-high 29 points, while
Boy Van Vliet led DBU with 16. Jacobs added 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds off the bench.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- DBU is now 3-2 on the road, but is still undefeated in home games this season.
- The Patriots remain in first place in the Heartland Conference at 3-1 after Arkansas-Fort Smith's victory over Newman. All three teams are tied for first place.
- The Hillcats improved to 46-6 at home since the start of the 2014-15 season.
DBU HEAD COACH BLAKE FLICKNER ON PLAYING IN A TOUGH ENVIRONMENT
"We knew Rogers State was too good of a team to go down without a fight at home. They don't lose here very often. We needed to make some more plays on both ends of the court. We had a chance on the road down the stretch, but today they made the big plays in the last few minutes a little more than us. We'll regroup and prepare to come back ready to go at home on Wednesday."
