THE RUNDOWN
The DBU Women's Soccer team found itself down with less than five minutes to play at St. Mary's on Thursday, but a tying goal by Summerlyn Heller and a game-winning overtime header by Delaney Schmidt kept the Patriots (7-2-2, 6-0-1 Heartland Conference) undefeated in conference play.
Ericca Everson opened the scoring just over two minutes into the match with a shot from inside the box on a feed from Abigail Olmos. The Rattlers (3-5-2, 1-5-1) tied the game in the ninth minute and after a late-game goal were 4:46 away from their second conference win and an upset of first-place DBU, but Heller found the back of the net with a free kick less than 80 seconds later to force overtime.
After the Patriots threatened for most of the first overtime period, Schmidt punctuated the road win with a header on a cross from Heller.Â
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
 - Thursday was the second straight overtime win for the Patriots and third straight overtime game.
 - DBU remains tied for first in the conference with St. Edward's, which defeated Texas A&M International 1-0 Thursday.Â
 - Schmidt's goal was her third game-winner of the year.
HEAD COACH MICHELLE LENARD ON A WILD FINISH
"I am really proud of how we rebounded from getting scored on with so little time on the clock. We scored a good goal to level the game and force overtime, and we felt that if we stuck to the game plan, we would eventually get a goal to win the game. We had a lot of chances from wide services today, and it's fitting that the game winner would come from a wide cross and a great header by Delaney. We have a lot we can learn from this game, but I'm very pleased with our resilience and grit."
