Patriots Claim Fourth Straight Heartland Tournament Title

THE RUNDOWN
The DBU Women's Soccer Team won its fourth consecutive Heartland Conference Tournament championship Saturday, defeating St. Edward's on penalty kicks after overtime ended with a score of 1-1. Lindsey Washburn's conversion gave the No. 2 seed Patriots (12-5-3) four makes in five shootout attempts, eliminating top-seeded St. Edward's (12-4-3), which made two of its first four tries.

The Hilltoppers took an early lead, heading in a goal just 44 seconds into the match, but Brittany Eccles answered in the 11th minute tied the game at one. Four saves by Hope Koym helped keep the game scoreless until penalty kicks. Jayme Woodfill, Emmy Niece, and Melanie Castelan made their attempts, and Koym made a stop to set up Washburn's game-winning conversion.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
 - DBU will make its fifth straight trip to the NCAA Regional and its seventh in eight years.

 - The Patriots and Hilltoppers played to overtime all three times they met this season.

 - DBU will find out its NCAA regional location, seed, and opponent on Monday. The Patriots ended the regular season ranked No. 8 in the South Central Region and defeated No. 7 Newman and No. 5 St. Edward's in the Heartland Conference Tournament.

COACH MICHELLE LENARD ON WINNING THE TITLE ON PENALTIES
"It's a fun way to win. It's not a fun way to lose, but give tons of credit to St. Edward's. They played a fantastic game. They're a great team. They had a great season, and we knew it was going to come down to the wire with them. There was no other way for it to really finish. We've been in the conference tournament eight times, and we've been in it with them seven, so we knew it was going to be a highly-contested game, and we knew we were going to have to fight the entire time."
