No. 10 DBU dropped its first road contest of the season Friday in a 12-1 loss at No. 11 Clemson. MD Johnson (1-1) only managed one scoreless inning as the heart of the Tiger order did repeated damage.
Clemson (5-0) took an early 2-0 lead after Chris Williams doubled home Patrick Cromwell and later came around to score in the first. A solo home run by Drew Wharton in the second extended the Tiger lead to 3-0. Robert Jolly doubled home Cromwell and Williams in the third.
After a 1-2-3 fourth inning, a two-run blast by Williams chased Johnson in the fifth. He finished with eight runs allowed on 10 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Trevor Conn came on in relief of Johnson, allowing two runs on two hits in one inning of work. He walked two batters and struck out one. Jimmy Fouse surrendered two runs on six hits across two and two-thirds innings with four strikeouts and one walk.
DBU scored without recording a hit in the ninth. Tim Millard walked. Garrett Wolforth was hit by a pitch. Evan Sandmann reached on an error to load the bases, and Jimmy Glowenke walked to break up the shutout.
Devlin Granberg had the most productive day at the plate for the Patriots (3-1), collecting two of their three hits and walking once. Granberg's first-inning double and Jameson Hannah's eight-inning two-bagger were DBU's only extra-base hits.
Jacob Hennessy (1-0) pitched six and one-third shutout innings to earn his first victory of the season, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out eight batters.
