Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to Clemson

THE LEAD
No. 10 DBU suffered a 3-2 loss to 11th ranked Clemson in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina.  The loss completed a three-game sweep by the Tigers over the Patriots.

With the bases loaded and the tying run standing at third base in the ninth inning, Clemson (7-0) closer Ryley Gilliam struck out Jimmy Glowenke to close out DBU (3-3).

The Tigers opened the scoring in the first inning when the Tigers' Seth Beer launched a two-run homer over the wall in right.  The Patriots followed suit in their half of the second when Glowenke singled home Tim Millard.

Following the home run in the first, DBU starter Luke Eldred retired 12 Clemson batters in a row before exiting with two outs in the fifth.  With two outs and runners at second and third, freshman lefty Peyton Sherlin struck out Logan Davidson to work out of the jam.

Trailing 2-1 into the bottom of the eighth, Clemson tacked on an insurance run when a Chris Williams sacrifice fly brought home an insurance run.

DBU opened the ninth with a Jameson Hannah single.  Two batters later, Matt Duce doubled with one out to put runners at second and third.  Following a fly out by Garrett Wolforth, Evan Sandmann drew a bases loaded walk to bring DBU to within a run.

 - DBU's four runs on the weekend matched the lowest run total in a three-game series in the program's Division I era dating back to 2004.
 - Clemson outscored the Patriots 24-4 in the three-game series.
