Patriots Use Patience to Outlast Oklahoma, 5-2

Box Score

THE LEAD
No. 17 DBU defeated No. 24 Oklahoma 5-1 Tuesday at Horner Ballpark. The Patriots (4-3) worked six walks, five of which came in a three-run seventh inning that broke a 1-1 tie.

After Tim Millard tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single in the sixth, DBU scored three times in the seventh without collecting a base hit in the inning. The first four batters walked, with Anders Green forcing home the go-ahead run in a pinch-hit role after falling behind 1-2. Blayne Jones added some insurance when he scored on a passed ball with Devlin Granberg at the plate. Luke Bandy scored on a wild pitch later in the same at-bat.

Kody Funderburk, the Patriots' starting pitcher, blasted a solo homer to center field for his first career dinger in the eighth.

The Patriots held Oklahoma (4-5) to three hits and one earned run. Funderburk pitched five innings in his first career start, giving up one hit and one unearned run. He struck out five batters and walked one.

Jarod Bayless, Kragen Kechely, and Peyton Sherlin combined for three no-hit innings of relief. Parker Towns allowed a solo home run to Kyler Murray in the ninth but kept the Sooners from doing any further damage. Kechely (1-0) earned the win, and Austin Hansen (0-1) took the loss.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
 - The Patriots won their first midweek game of the season after being rained out last week.
 - DBU scored more runs Tuesday than it did in its previous three games.
 - Half of the Patriots' six hits went for extra bases.

COACH DAN HEEFNER ON HIS TEAM'S PLATE DISCIPLINE
"That was big. It started with Jimmy Glowenke. He's a freshman, but he plays with a ton of confidence... I thought the at-bat of the game was Anders Green with the bases loaded. To come in cold off the bench, down 1-2, and draw the walk, and give us the lead, he let us relax a bit."
