THE RUNDOWN
DBU rode a stellar performance by redshirt senior Trevor Conn to a 3-1 series-opening win over Evansville on Friday at Horner Ballpark. Jimmy Glowenke and Matt Duce each picked up a pair of hits as the Patriots (29-15, 10-3 Missouri Valley Conference) struck early and held on for the victory.
Glowenke doubled in the first inning and scored on Duce's single to right. Kody Funderburk plated Duce two batters later, as he laced a double down the right field line.
Hill Alexander crossed the plate in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Devlin Granberg for what would prove to be the Patriots' final run.
Conn made sure those were all the runs DBU would need. He limited the Purple Aces (8-31, 1-12 MVC) to two hits through eight shutout innings, striking out five batters and walking two with one hit batsman.
MacGregor Hines picked up his team-leading fourth save of the season, pitching around a solo home run for his second save of the week.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Both hits Conn gave up were singles.
- Glowenke extended his hitting streak to 10 games. He is batting .425 (17-40) during that stretch.
- Conn has not allowed a run in 17.1 innings pitched.
COACH DAN HEEFNER ON CONN'S EFFORT
"He's a pro. He's mature. He's a fifth-year senior, and he knows what he's doing. He just keeps getting better, and it's fun to watch him right now."
