MATCH ONE
The DBU Volleyball team (7-7) fell in four sets on the road against Texas Woman's University (8-5) (15-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-25) on Saturday morning in Denton, Texas. Senior
Katie Nicholson led DBU with 10 kills and five blocks, while senior
Kasey Holand recorded eight kills and three digs of her own. Senior
Merci Perry posted a team high 27 assists and five kills.
The opening set was tight early, but TWU kept the Lady Patriots at bay throughout the set. Down 5-1, DBU scored nine of the next fifteen points to tie the Pioneers and force them into a timeout. Despite the Lady Patriots efforts, TWU rallied to score six of the next eight points led by Isabel Vega, taking the set 25-15.
In the second set, TWU jumped out to a quick 6-3 lead that was quickly erased by 8-2 run by the Lady Patriots. A pair of attack errors from TWU knotted the score at 16-16.
Katie Nicholson added a kill keeping the pressure on the Pioneers, to lead DBU to a set two win, 25-20.
In the third set, DBU jumped out to a 6-4 lead after going on a 4-0 run. TWU would not go quietly, due to a Maggie Pyles kill that tied the match up at 10 all. After a DBU timeout, the Lady Patriots would surge back extending their lead to four up 18-14, but TWU would take the lead by one forcing DBU into their second timeout. After the break, TWU pulled away for the 25-21 set three victory.
TWU never trailed in the fourth set as they went onto win the set 25-15, sealing the match 3-1.
MATCH TWO
The DBU Lady Patriots concluded play in Denton with a three-set loss to Oklahoma Baptist (8-9) (15-25, 14-25, 21-25).
Katie Nicholson and
Brooke Clark lead the team with six kills each, while
Alexa Lezak posted five kills of her own.
Strealy Sizelove added a team-high 15 assists, while
Merci Perry registered nine assists and six digs.
After falling behind to open the match, DBU rallied to take cut the lead to four early on. The two teams then traded points to get to before OBU went on a 13-2 run to pull away for a 25-15 decision.
Down 3-0 early in the second set, DBU went on a run to cut the lead 6-3. However, the Bison rallied with a 4-0 surge, highlighted by a pair of kills from sophomore Mikayla Watson. OBU maintained the lead to go onto a 25-14 set two victory despite four kills from
Brooke Clark.
OBU began the third set with the quick lead, but DBU would make it 7-6 in favor of the Lady Patriots. However, the lead would not last long before the Bison went on a 7-3 run making the score 14-9. The Lady Patriots would counter with a run of their own, narrowing the lead to only one in favor of OBU, 16-15. Out of an OBU timeout, DBU took its first lead of the game from a kill by
Katie Nicholson to make the score 17-16. Despite DBU's efforts, The Bison would score the last four points of the match, sealing the victory 25-21.
