Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 19 DBU Outlasts Lubbock Christian in Triple-Overtime Slugfest

THE RUNDOWN
The DBU Men's Basketball team defeated conference rival Lubbock Christian in a triple-overtime slugfest at the Rip Griffin Center Thursday night. The Patriots and Chaps exchanged the lead 16 times in a physical contest that felt more like a boxing match than a basketball game between the two best defenses in the Lone Star Conference.

DBU (6-0, 2-0) appeared to take control midway through the second half on a 14-0 run, but Lubbock Christian's aggressive defense would force a four-minute scoring drought to end regulation tied at 61.

Multiple Patriots would step up in the following three overtimes to help secure the victory. Chandler Jacobs attacked the paint in overtime, keeping DBU alive by shooting 80 percent from the charity stripe. Carter Brown hit an off-balanced three pointer with two seconds remaining in the second overtime to even the game at 84 all. Carson Hughes and Jonathyn Washington saved their best for last as they led DBU on a 12-1 run in the final four minutes to put the game away.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Thursday's contest was DBU's first triple overtime since their 80-78 victory over St. Edward's in 2016.
- Carson Hughes continues to shine; the sophomore recorded a career high 22 points and a rim-rocking dunk to lead the team in scoring.
- Thursday's game lasted two hours and forty-five minutes with three different Patriots playing over 40 minutes.

HEAD COACH BLAKE  FLICKNER ON THE WIN

"What can I say? These guys found a way to grind out a really tough, hard earned win. Guys made plays in clutch moments in a hotly contested game for 55 minutes. I'm so proud of the way they hung in there mentally and physically. There were too many crucial plays to mention them all… but this is why we love playing college basketball because moments like these are so much fun."
