Patriots Rout Minnesota 9-0 in Series Opener

THE LEAD
The DBU Baseball team was dominant in a series-opening win over Minnesota by a score of 9-0 on Friday night. Jordan Martinson turned in a second straight scoreless outing as the offense put up its highest scoring total of the 2019 season.

Martinson preserved his spotless earned run average with eight strikeouts to one walk through six scoreless innings. Minnesota (1-4) managed just four hits off the senior lefty, only one of which made it past the infield.

The Patriots (4-1) took an early lead on an RBI single by Jimmy Glowenke in the first inning. Two more runs came home in the second thanks to a wild pitch and an RBI double by Luke Bandy.

A two-run single by Jackson Glenn capped a three-run fourth inning for the Patriots. Three straight RBI hits in the fifth, highlighted by Herbert Iser's run-scoring double brought the Patriot run total to nine for the evening.

Zach Heaton and Peyton Sherlin combined for three innings of scoreless relief in their season debuts.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
 - DBU defeated Minnesota for the first time since 1987.
 - Luke Bandy reached base in all five plate appearances in his return to the leadoff spot.
 - Patriot pitching has recorded two shutouts in 2019 after not shutting out an opponent in all of 2018.

COACH DAN HEEFNER ON MARTINSON'S SECOND STELLAR START OF THE SEASON
"He's had two great starts with us, and this is what we've seen from him since the fall and all the way through the preseason. He's throwing three pitches for strikes. It's good stuff. He's a guy who's made 40 starts in his college career, and he's definitely pitching like it right now."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

34 - Jimmy Glowenke extended his reached-base streak to 34 games with his first-inning RBI single.
38 - Martinson faced 38 batters this season before allowing a hit to the outfield.
7 - Patriot batters walked seven times, compared to just five strikeouts.
