Patriots Sweep Valparaiso to Open MVC Play

DBU finished out a weekend sweep of Valparaiso with a 6-1 win Sunday at Horner Ballpark. The Patriots (21-6, 3-0 Missouri Valley Conference) took the lead in the first inning and never trailed in the game.

Jackson Glenn's sac fly in the first inning drove in Jimmy Glowenke to start the scoring. DBU enjoyed its highest-scoring inning of the afternoon in the third, pushing across three runs on an RBI double by Glenn and RBI singles by Glowenke and Blayne Jones. Glowenke added another RBI single in the fourth.

The Crusaders (5-19, 0-3) scored their lone run in the fifth, a tally the Patriots would get back on Luke Bandy's RBI double down the left field line in the eighth.

Jimmy Fouse earned the win to improve to 2-0, providing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with one strikeout and one hit allowed. Travis Stone, MacGregor Hines, and Kragen Kechely combined for a scoreless bullpen effort.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

 - After falling behind in the top of the first Friday, the Patriots did not trail in the series after taking the lead in the second inning of the series opener.
 - DBU swept its MVC-opening series for the third time in four years.
 - Zach Heaton's six strikeouts were a career high.

COACH DAN HEEFNER ON GLOWENKE'S PRODUCTION FROM THE LEADOFF SPOT
"We've been moving guys around there a lot, but we want to be more consistent with what we're doing at the top of the order. The most important thing at the top is that it's a guy who gets on base. Jimmy Glowenke has our highest on-base percentage, but I think another thing that changes things for us and how we do our lineup is I think we have some really good guys at the bottom of our order, and there's going to be guys who get on base. So then we're ready to roll right when we get to the top of the order."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

14 - Blayne Jones extended his hitting streak to 14 games Sunday with his RBI single in the third.
38 - DBU pitching struck out 38 Crusaders over the weekend, its most in a three-game series in 2019.
4 - Four different Patriots - Jimmy Glowenke, Augie Isaacson, Luke Bandy, and Christian Boulware - collected two hits Sunday.
