THE LEAD
Jordan Martinson turned in one of his best starts of the season Thursday as DBU took game one from Missouri State at Hammons Field in Springfield, Missouri, by a score of 6-1. Martinson threw 7.0 innings and allowed just one run, as his teammates scored six times on six hits while taking advantage of four MSU errors.
DBU (32-13, 9-4) struck first in the top of the first on
Jimmy Glowenke's RBI single. Martinson walked the first batter he faced and allowed that man to score the tying run, but that was the final run for the Bears (13-31, 4-9).
The Patriots regained the lead in the second inning, when
Evan Sandmann tapped a ball back to MSU starter Jake Lochner, who caught
Luke Bandy trying to score from third. Lochner threw his glove away trying to tag Bandy, and his subsequent throw to the plate bounced to allow the DBU center fielder to score.
Bryce Ball and Glowenke added back-to-back RBI singles in the second to further the DBU advantage.
Martinson settled in after the first, as he finished with eight strikeouts, three walks, and five hits allowed. He retired nine straight batters from the third through the fifth inning.
DBU scored two more in the sixth on a wild pitch and an RBI single by
Andres Sosa.
Jarod Bayless finished the game with two scoreless, hitless innings of relief with two strikeouts and one walk.

COACH DAN HEEFNER ON MARTINSON'S PERFORMANCE
"I thought he made a really good adjustment in the middle of the game. That was really big at this point in the season at the start of a weekend series like this, and for him to be able to get us through seven innings was huge. He had some real quick innings in the middle there, and that's what veteran guys are able to do. They're able to make adjustments in-game, so I was proud of him for doing that."
