Patriots Outlast Missouri State in Pitchers' Duel

THE LEAD
No. 22 DBU shut out Missouri State behind Jordan Martinson's 7.1 scoreless innings in a 1-0 win in the first double elimination round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at Duffy Bass Field in Normal, Illinois, on Wednesday. The Patriots (39-16) managed just one run, but between Martinson and Burl Carraway, that run stood up.

Martinson struck out nine batters and walked just one while scattering three hits. After a first-inning single Martinson retired 14 straight Missouri State (20-35) hitters.

The Patriots had trouble figuring out MSU starter Davis Schwab for most of the day, but Jimmy Glowenke's RBI single in the sixth game DBU the only lead it would need. Carraway stranded the potential tying run at third in the eighth inning and pitched around an infield hit in the ninth to earn his third save.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

 - DBU will face the loser of Wednesday's game between Indiana State and Evansville on Thursday.
 - Martinson became the Patriots' Division I era single season strikeout leader with 108, fourth-most all-time in program history.
 - Schwab was Missouri State's starter on May 4 when the Bears shut out DBU on one hit.

COACH DAN HEEFNER ON MARTINSON'S EFFORT
"That was as good as he's been, a guy who's pitched in a lot of games. You get him in a postseason game, he had everything working. Great presence, tempo, everything. He was awesome."
