THE LEAD
No. 23 DBU evened their series at No. 13 North Carolina with a 6-3 win over the Tar Heels on Saturday at Boshamer Stadium.Â
Chandler Arnold earned his first career win, working 5.0 innings and allowing just two runs, while
Dan Pruitt and
Ryan Wrobleski each hit home runs to spark the Patriot offense.Â
Â
After falling behind 1-0 through the first two innings, DBU (5-1) evened the score when Pruitt left the yard for the first time this year with a towering blast over the wall in left field. UNC (6-1) took the lead back in their half of the third with a solo shot from Dlyan Harris.
Down 2-1 in the fourth, the Patriots struck for three runs to take a lead that they would not relinquish. A lead-off single by
Jeffrey David set the stage for a
Blayne Jones double that tied the game. Two batters later, Wrobleski delivered a two-run homer that hit off the foul pole down the left field line to give DBU a 4-2 advantage.
An RBI single from
Jackson Glenn extended the lead to 5-2 in the top of the seventh before the Tar Heels responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning.Â
Leading 5-3 in the top of the ninth, a two-out bases loaded walk by Jones increased the Patriot lead to three. DBU closer,
Burl Carraway, needed to face just three batters to close out UNC in the Tar Heels' half of the ninth, striking out Will Schroeder to close out the game.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- DBU notched their first win over a top 25 team on the road since May 8, 2018, at Texas Tech.
-
Luke Trahan,
Peyton Sherlin,
Kragen Kechely, and
Burl Carraway combined to allow just one run in 4.0 innings out of the bullpen.
- The Patriots homered twice in a game for the second time this year.
HEAD COACH DAN HEEFNER ON THE TEAM'S RESPONSE AFTER GAME ONE
"Our guys never got down at the end of game one. They stayed into it, had good energy, were still talking the game and that carried over to game two. We got down early in the second game, but our guys never panicked. We were putting together good bats and things started to click. I also thought that
Chandler Arnold showed who he really was from the second inning on today. All the work that he's put into the off-season has paid off and he made the decision today that he wasn't going to tip-toe and he trusted his stuff and did outstanding."
