THE RUNDOWN
DBU (3-4, 0-2 LSC) could not complete the comeback against St. Mary's (8-3, 1-0 LSC), falling 3-2 on a stormy Wednesday night at Patriot Socer Field. After giving up three first-half scores, two of them in the final five minutes, the Patriots blanked the Rattlers in the second half as Peyton Voelker and Christian Naizer led a valiant comeback effort.Â
St. Mary's offense found its rhythm deep into the first half. After scoring the go-ahead goal in the 27th minute, STMU netted two momentum-crippling goals in the 40th and 44th minutes to carry a 3-0 lead into halftime. Â
However, as has become a tradition with Jess Jobe's team, the Patriots rallied in the second half. After getting no corner kicks in the first 45 minutes, DBU earned four in the final frame. The Patriot offense forced its way into the attacking third and launched 10 second-half shots at a STMU defense that ranks second in the conference.Â
Peyton Voelker chased down his own deflected shot in the 62nd minute, slipping it past the goalkeeper to give DBU its first score of the game. Then, in the 79th minute, Christian Naizer fired the 3-2 score inside the left goalpost on a penalty kick. The Patriots continued their furious comeback attempt and came just inches away from the equalizer as Rattlers' goalkeeper Raul Guillamon-Bejar pushed the ball over the top of the post in the closing moments.
