THE RUNDOWN
West Texas A&M (10-4, 4-2 LSC) outlasted DBU, 3-2, in a double-overtime battle Saturday evening in Dallas, Texas. The Patriots (4-5, 1-2 LSC) tested the No. 15 Buffs for 102 minutes before the game-winning goal from WT's Chris Palomino snuck under the top crossbar.
West Texas pounced on the Patriots early, finding the game's first goal just one minute into the match. DBU would shake off the early score and continue to press on. Finally, in the 35th minute, Ethan Martinez drilled a penalty kick past Buffs' goalkeeper Tom Miles to reset the game at 1-1.Â
The beginning of the second half looked exactly like the first, as the Buffs, armed with an 18 mile per hour wind at their backs, stormed down the field and punched in the 2-1 score in 90 seconds. But, once again, DBU rallied. Peyton Voelker slipped the equalizer to Mason Wallak in the 60th minute as the Patriots began to threaten with the upset.Â
Both the pace of play and the intensity increased as both squads looked to avoid overtime. A red card in the 78th minute left the Patriots a man down as they battled through the rest of regulation and the first overtime with 10 men on the pitch. In the second overtime, Palomino found his second goal of the game to hand DBU the 3-2 loss.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOWÂ
-The 102 minute battle was DBU's first double-overtime match of the season.
-The Buffs and the Patriots have entered double-overtime in two of their last three meetings.Â
-The last three matches between these two squads have been decided by a single goal.
COACH JESS JOBE ON THE GAMEÂ
"I'm extremely proud of the effort. We faced some tough circumstances and fought back from being down twice. I thought we showed a lot of grit and a lot of commitment to how we want to play... We can look back on some moments and definitely find ways to improve, but overall, that was a good team, and we competed with them... I think we need to start believing in ourselves and what we are capable of doing a little earlier in games... We are going to look back and see some really good stuff and also moments where we allowed West Texas to do the things they're so dangerous at. I feel really good about the effort in our performance, and now we just have to move on.Â
