No. 5 DBU Uses a Strong First Half to Top ENMU, 3-0

THE RUNDOWN
No. 5 DBU (13-2, 9-1 LSC) outpaced ENMU (2-11-1, 0-8-1 LSC) by a score of 3-0 Saturday afternoon in Portales, New Mexico. First-half goals from Ashley Merrill, Jenna Patterson, and Summerlyn Heller led the Patriots to their sixth straight win while the defense forced its second shutout of the week.

DBU dealt all of its offensive damage in the opening half. In the sixth minute, Ashley Merrill found the 1-0 goal when she outjumped a Greyhound to head home a Summerlyn Heller cross. The Patriots continued to apply pressure, placing most of their shots on frame in another efficient performance. In the 19th minute, Jenna Patterson delivered a booming kick between a pair of backline defenders as the 2-0 score sailed inside the left goalpost.

DBU's defense created offense on the game's final goal. Kathryn Mullis stripped the ball off a Greyhound and began sprinting into a wide-open attacking third. The freshman midfielder then slid a perfect pass to Summerlyn Heller in space as Heller outraced the pursuing defense for the 3-0 strike in the 35th minute.

Defensively, the Patriots held ENMU to just nine total shots, four of which landed on target. DBU conceded no corner kick opportunities as Hailey Brown earned her seventh shutout win of the season.
