No. 5 DBU Bests OC 2-1, Finishes Unbeaten on the Road

THE RUNDOWN
The No. 5 Patriots bested the Eagles of Oklahoma Christian, 2-1, on a chilly afternoon in Edmond, Oklahoma. Goals from Blythe Obar and Ashley Merrill secured the win as DBU concludes road play with a perfect 7-0 record.

After battling the Patriots to a 2-2 double-overtime draw during the 2020 campaign, the Eagles again threatened to spoil DBU's win streak. OC grabbed a quick 1-0 lead after Thalia Delgado scored in the opening 90 seconds following a goalkeeper collision. The game-tying goal arrived off the foot of defensive specialist Blythe Obar as the first half ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

DBU pushed through harsh winds and the Oklahoma Christian defense in the second half of action. Michelle Gonzalez (Marta) tallied her third assist of the year when she connected with Ashley Merrill for a low center strike in the 67th minute. The Patriots built a wall around the net following the go-ahead goal, allowing the Eagles one shot attempt in the final 20 minutes of play.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
-The Patriots extend their win streak to seven games.
- At 94 games played, Summerlyn Heller is the program leader.
-With 194 career wins, Coach Michelle Lenard is six victories away from 200.

COACH MICHELLE LENARD ON THE ROAD WIN
"It's tough to win on the road, especially at the end of the season when teams are in competition for playoff spots. We gave up an unfortunate goal early but showed good resolve to keep pushing until we got the equalizer. We had a very good second half and were unfortunate not to score at least once more. It's time to go home and focus on closing out the regular season."

5 -Ashley Merrill has scored in each of the last five games.
