THE RUNDOWN
DBU (10-6, 7-6) came up short in an upset bid Saturday afternoon, falling in straight sets to No. 15 UT Tyler (17-1, 13-1) on Senior Day in Tyler, Texas.
Halee Van Poppel posted a double-double, leading all scorers with 15 kills while also recording 15 digs.
DBU fell behind 7-2 early, but took the lead on a 6-0 run on the arm of
Audrey Nunes – who notched 3 of her 8 kills in rapid succession. After a pair of UT Tyler points, the Lady Patriots added on five straight to increase the lead to 13-9. That advantage would open up further to 15-10 on a
Kayla Brock ace. UT Tyler did not go away, however, and tied the opening set up at 17 with a 5-0 spurt.
Price Reeves capitalized on a feed from
Aryn Walton to give DBU a 21-19 lead. Both teams exchanged points, with Nunes pulling the Lady Patriots even at 24-apiece, but UT Tyler claimed the final two points to take the 26-24 victory.
Van Poppel gave DBU a 5-4 advantage with a kill and a service ace, but UT Tyler responded with a 7-0 stretch to take control of the second set.
Sofia Black would cap a 4-0 run to bring DBU within four at 17-13, but attack errors kept UT Tyler in the driver's seat the rest of the way. Van Poppel picked up a kill and DBU would benefit from an opposing attack error to temporarily extend the frame before a final Hannah Callison kill gave the home Patriots a 25-20 win.
A trio of 5-0 runs by UT Tyler opened up the third set at 19-7. DBU eventually worked back to within ten at 24-14 when Black added her fifth block of the match. Kacie Kimbrough finished off the final kill of the afternoon on the next play to secure the 3-0 UT Tyler win.
