THE RUNDOWN
DBU (11-6, 8-6) churned out a 3-0 sweep versus Western New Mexico (4-19, 3-11) on Friday night at the Burg Center in Dallas, Texas. The offense fired on all cylinders, compiling a .447 hitting percentage.
Halee Van Poppel led all scorers with 17 kills, while
Audrey Nunes added 10 of her own on 17 total attacks.
The Mustangs kept the first half of the opening frame close, trailing by two at 13-11 before DBU went to work. A kill across the middle from
Alyssa Parks sparked a 5-1 run, and a few plays later the Lady Patriots rattled off six straight to extend the lead to 24-14. A service error gave DBU the final point and a 1-0 lead.
DBU trailed 5-3 early in the second set, but a 6-0 stretch forced WNMU coach Holly Watts to call timeout. Out of the break, the Mustangs went on a run of their own to tie things up at 10-apiece. Both teams exchanged points before another DBU surge provided the cushion to close out the set comfortably.
Audrey Nunes secured set point to give the Lady Patriots a 25-19 win.
A 9-2 run in the early stages of set three gave DBU an insurmountable lead. The Mustangs chipped in a few points before another Lady Patriot run capped by
Halee Van Poppel gave coach
Jordan Fish's squad a 20-9 edge. Van Poppel clinched the match on a feed from
Kayla Brock to give DBU a 25-16 win and the 3-0 sweep.
