THE RUNDOWN
No. 6 DBU (14-7) knocked off No. 11 Eastern New Mexico (7-19) in straight sets on Tuesday night at the Burg Center to advance to the Lone Star Conference Tournament Quarterfinals.
Halee Van Poppel led all scorers with 14 kills, while
Price Reeves notched 7 on 9 total attacks.
DBU jumped out to a 6-2 advantage early on a
Kenzie McNeill service ace. The Greyhounds bounced back, keeping pace with the Lady Patriots before securing their first lead of the night at 15-14. A 5-1 run down the stretch of the opening frame gave DBU a 21-17 edge, and
Audrey Nunes and
Sofia Black teamed up to secure the set-clinching block a handful of plays later for the 25-20 win.
The Lady Patriots took a 12-9 advantage in set two thanks to a 4-0 run and held on to the lead the rest of the way. Nunes chipped in consecutive kills to give DBU a six-point cushion at 22-16, and some great defense paved the way for a
Sofia Black ace to end the set at 25-21.
DBU wasted no time establishing the tone in set three, going up 9-2 on a
Kayla Brock feed to
Haley Harman. Coach
Jordan Fish's squad didn't look back, fending off a Greyhounds run and maintaining a strong lead throughout to finish off the final home match at the Burg Center. Nunes put the Lady Patriots on match point before an ENMU attack error gave DBU the 25-15 victory and the 3-0 sweep.
