THE RUNDOWN
The Patriots (5-7, 2-5 LSC) fell to the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals, 3-0, Wednesday night on the road. An LCU goal in the 12th minute coupled with two second-half scores handed DBU its second consecutive loss as the Chaps (8-5-1, 5-1-1 LSC) picked up their fourth straight win.Â
DBU struggled to keep the ball on its foot during the first half of play. Lubbock Christian took advantage of its possession, firing nine shots in the opening period and placing six on target. Patriots' goalkeeper Alexander Knepper deflected two of LCU's attacks, but the goal from Jacopo Ghezzi in the 12th minute would prove to be the game-winner.Â
The DBU offense fought its way into four shots in the second half but proved unable to place any of them on goal. LCU earned an insurance score in the 47th minute when Tomas Cassa tiptoed over DBU's end line to connect with Tariq Bakkali for the 2-0 strike. The Chaps scored once more in the 60th minute while their defense continued to thwart DBU's advances.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
-Despite the loss, DBU's 3-3 road record is its best since 2012.
-The Patriots were shutout for the first time in five games.
- Kellen Gullion made his DBU debut, playing eight minutes in relief of Alexander Knepper.Â
COACH JESS JOBE ON THE MATCH
"We got a good look at a quality opponent tonight. LCU played a good game and had a great game plan. They stepped into their rhythm pretty early, and we didn't do enough to disrupt it... I don't think we started the game with the correct mentality to attack the challenges we knew we'd face tonight. Looking past this a little bit, we have a big game on Saturday against UT Tyler. This just wasn't our best game, and we didn't play the way we know how to, and we will have to work through that now. We lost some momentum, and we will need to figure out how to overcome that."Â
