COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF
The No. 5 DBU Women's Soccer hosts No. 4 Seattle Pacific in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Saturday, December 4, at 1:00 p.m. The Patriots and Falcons meet for the first time in history with a trip to the Final Four in Colorado within reach.
SPU survived the Sweet 16 with a 2-1 win over Western Washington on Thursday. Goals from Claire Neder and Sophie Beadle helped outpace a Western Washington squad that's mustered just one goal against SPU in the last four meetings. On the other side of the bracket, DBU hoisted its second-ever South Central Regional trophy with a 1-0 win over No. 9 UC Colorado Springs. The Patriots broke the 81-minute stalemate with a goal from Delaney Schmidt.
PATRIOT STORYLINES
-DBU is 9-2 in one-score games this season.
-The Patriots have received tremendous production from their freshmen. Goalkeeper Breanna Bowen secured the shutout win on Thursday, defender Rachel Allen has started all 22 games, and midfielder Kathryn Mullis averages 40 minutes per match.
-DBU's 19 win campaign sets a new program record.Â
-The Patriots have crossed paths with just two other GNAC programs. DBU played Montana State three times between 2005-2006 before meeting Western Washington in the 2015 quarterfinals. Â
-Five Patriots have recorded five or more goals this season: Ashley Merrill (15), Delaney Schmidt (14), Abigail Olmos (8), Marta (6), and Jenna Patterson (6).Â
SCOUTING SEATTLE PACIFICÂ
-The Falcons boast a championship pedigree. Seattle Pacific clinched the 2008 title in double overtime against West Florida.Â
-Coach Arby Busey has led SPU to its third NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015.Â
-Sophia Chilzuk is an absolute terror with the ball at her feet. Chilzuk's team-high 17 assists lead Division II soccer and rank third among all NCAA programs. Â
-Sophie Beadle is also an important player to watch. The sophomore forward has scored or assisted in four of SPU's last five matches and netted the game-winner against Western Washington.Â
-Makenna Rietz leads the Falcons in goals scored (13) and places 0.54 percent of her shots on target.Â
