No. 21 DBU Sweeps Austin Peay to Open 2021 Campaign

THE LEAD
No. 21 DBU brought out the brooms and swept the Governors of Austin Peay on a sunny Monday afternoon at Horner Ballpark, 12-2. The Patriots utilized the long ball again, sending five more baseballs out of the park on their way to a run-rule victory. The Patriots now lead all of college baseball in home runs hit with 11.

Jace Grady didn't make the Patriot faithful wait long for offense in the series finale. The freshman smashed his first career home run over the right field wall for a grand slam, giving DBU an early 4-0 lead. They wouldn't end up needing more in the end, but the Pats kept the accelerator down and continued to pile up runs.

Cole Moore ripped a 2-RBI single up the middle in the third, George Specht hit his first career home run, and Andres Sosa drove in two in the fourth. In the sixth, the powerful duo of Jackson Glenn and Blayne Jones each sent a baseball over the Patriot bullpen to account for all twelve runs. Jones went 1 for 2 with two walks and the sixth inning longball in his first game since being named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week and National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball.

The Patriots pitching staff held the Governor offense to a two-run tally for the third consecutive day. Houston transfer Jared Pettitte made his debut in a Patriot uniform, throwing 3.1 innings and striking out four. Zach Heaton would come on and throw a sterling 1.2 innings without allowing a baserunner to earn his first win of the season. Luke Trahan and Ross Carver also saw their first action of the season to close down the series.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- DBU's sweep of the Governors is their fourth straight sweep of an opening weekend opponent at Horner Ballpark.
- The Patriots worked quality at bats all week long, capitalizing on deep counts and converting them into runs.

- DBU used the later innings of each of their first three games to work in a number of players, both in the field and on the mound.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
4 – Blayne Jones launched four HRs over the weekend. He is only one long ball shy of his career high (5) after just three games.
11 – With their five home runs today, DBU now leads all of college baseball with 11 after opening weekend.
36 – The Patriots posted 36 runs over their opening series against the Governors. It's their largest total on opening weekend since 2014 when they scored a staggering 52 runs in a three-game sweep of Mississippi Valley State.

HEAD COACH DAN HEEFNER ON BLAYNE JONES
"There isn't a guy in this clubhouse who isn't rooting for Blayne. He's improved every single year and plays the game the right way. He's humble and exemplifies what it means to handle success. We're really thrilled for him to have this hot start."
