THE LEAD
No. 21 DBU was bested by Gonzaga, 10-7, amidst varying downpours from the Texas sky. The Patriots gave up ten runs on eight hits and made three errors in the contest. Most importantly, Patriot pitchers struggled with command, issuing 13 free passes and hitting three batters in the rain.
DBU started strong, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first. After Andres Sosa drew a bases loaded walk, Jace Grady smashed a two RBI single to left field. Andrew Benefield would double down the left field line to drive in two more.
It remained 5-0 until the third inning when, after the second lightening delay of the night, Chandler Arnold came on to replace starting pitcher Kyle Rich. Arnold took the mound as the skies opened up and the rain poured down. Arnold would go just 1.1 innings, issuing five free passes over that time. A combination of key hits and a passed ball led to three runs in the third inning for the Zags.
While the Patriots would respond in the bottom of the third with a Ryan Wrobleski RBI double, the Zags piled on the runs down the stretch. Gonzaga would score in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings respectively.
The Patriots controlled the bleeding until the seventh inning when the Bulldogs broke the 6-6 tie with a barrage of four runs.
Jackson Glenn would send a solo home run over the fence in the eighth, but the Patriots would leave two runners on in the ninth to conclude the comeback attempt at 10-7.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
