THE RUNDOWN
In the season series finale, DBU (1-7) fell in straight sets to No. 22 UT Tyler (8-0) Wednesday night at the Burg Center. The visiting Patriots controlled all three sets and held off a late DBU surge to clinch the 3-0 win (14-25, 15-25, 18-25).
DBU knotted things up at 2-2 in the opening set before a 15-5 UT Tyler run put the first frame out of reach.
Bailey Hebert recorded three of her team-high seven kills down the stretch, but it was not enough to close the gap as UT Tyler took advantage of DBU errors and secured a 1-0 advantage.Â
Coach Kokel's squad again found themselves trailing early in the second set, as a wave of attack errors spotted UT Tyler a 4-1 lead. DBU fell behind by as much as 11 before a 5-0 run gave the team some much-needed energy and forced a timeout. Following the break in action, the momentum swung the opposite direction and UT Tyler closed out the second set 25-15.
The third set played out similarly, as DBU opened the scoring on a
Carly Earnest kill before UT Tyler capitalized on errors and opened up an early lead. The set appeared out of reach following a DBU service error that gave the visiting Patriots an 18-10 advantage, but Kokel's team did not back down. A quick 8-2 run – highlighted by a timely
Alyssa Parks block across the middle – brought DBU to within two. That was all the Lady Patriots would score, however, as each of the last five points went to UT Tyler – including three kills from Christina Escamilla – and the 22nd-ranked visiting Patriots finalized a 3-0 win.
