Patriots Suffer 12-Run Loss to Gonzaga

THE RUNDOWN
No. 21 DBU fell behind 2-1 in their four-game series with a 19-7 loss to Gonzaga on Saturday at Horner Ballpark.  A nine-run uprising by the Bulldogs in the third inning handed the Patriots what proved to be an insurmountable deficit.

After falling behind 11-0 through four-and-a-half innings, DBU (4-2) began to chip away at the Gonzaga (4-3) lead.  A double by River Town plated the Patriots' first run, scoring Cole Moore from second base.

With Town standing at second base, Gonzaga right-hander Alek Jacob was ejected from the game after the umpire crew inspected his glove and found a foreign substance.  Jacob exited the game with an 11-strikeout performance, one shy of a career-high.

The Patriots added another run in the fifth when Austin Bell singled to right to bring in Town.

Down by 10 in the bottom of the sixth, Ryan Wrobleski smashed a grand slam over the wall in centerfield to bring the Patriots to within six.  One inning later, Jace Grady ripped a double inside the bag at first base to plate a run and cut the Gonzaga lead to 12-7, but that is as close as DBU would come as the Bulldogs scored three runs in the eighth to go back up by a score of 15-7.

In the top of the ninth, the Zags tacked on four more runs highlighted by a pair of two-run homers from Brett Harris and Jack Machtolf.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The nine-run inning for Gonzaga in the top of the third is the most runs allowed by DBU since the Patriots surrendered nine runs in the third inning at New Mexico State on April 5, 2013.
- The 19 runs allowed are the most by the Patriots since they gave up 23 to South Dakota State on April 3, 2010.
- DBU entered today leading the nation in home runs.  With Ryan Wrobleski's grand slam, the Patriots have now hit 16 home runs on the season.
