THE RUNDOWN
In the final regular season series at the Burg Center, DBU (3-8) was unable to gain the upper hand against A&M Commerce (3-6) and fell to the Lions in straight sets (20-25, 24-26, 25-16).
The Lady Patriots jumped out to a 2-0 lead early thanks to a great defensive play at the net by
Sofia Black and
Macey Winburn. That was the last time DBU would experience a lead in the first set, as a 6-0 run gave A&M Commerce the boost needed to power through a close matchup.
Cathy Kokel's team pulled to within one multiple times, including at 18-17, but a flurry of A&M Commerce kills closed out the opening frame.
In a second set that had 15 ties and 16 lead changes, DBU went toe-to-toe with the Lions and managed to extend the frame. A
Kayla Brock service ace gave the Lady Patriots a 15-14 lead, but the Lions quickly retook the lead and held it until set point. A
Bailey Hebert block followed by an
Alyssa Parks kill knotted things up at 24-apiece, but Nicki Gonelli clinched the last two points for Commerce and extended the Lions' lead to 2-0.
Carly Earnest poured in a trio of kills in the third set to lead DBU offensively, but the Lady Patriots did not have enough firepower to keep pace with an aggressive Lions attack. A kill from Parks brought DBU back to within 7 at 17-10, but the point differential would not shrink any further. A&M Commerce made plays on both ends of the court to secure a 25-16 win and the 3-0 road sweep.
