THE RUNDOWN
DBU swept away Valparaiso with their 5-2 win in the Saturday finale behind a dominate effort from Luke Eldred and company on the mound. The Patriots (18-7) won all four games against Valpo (5-14) and start Missouri Valley Conference play with a perfect record. They are alone atop the Valley standings.
Quick starts for the Patriots were a theme this weekend, and that trend continued on Saturday. After Eldred worked two scoreless frames, Christian Boulware roped an RBI-single up the middle to put DBU on the board.
They would add to that lead in the fourth, sixth, and eighth innings. George Specht and Ryan Wrobleski had RBI-singles, while Andrew Benefield doubled home the fifth run. Valparaiso wouldn't score until the ninth inning, when back-to-back home runs put the visitors on the board. Ross Carver would buckle down, however, ending the threat and closing the door on a perfect 4-0 weekend.
The win went to Luke Eldred who, once again, dazzled through his two innings of work. The win was the first for Eldred since June 3rd, 2018, when Eldred threw eight innings in a 9-4 elimination game win over Southern Miss in the Fayetteville Regional.

"We think we've got the pieces; we just need to continue to grow in our competitiveness. We know it's not going to be easy, but we've got to learn to battle in close games and I think you're seeing that from us."
