THE RUNDOWN
The Patriots walked off the Redbirds in game one of the doubleheader, 11-7, courtesy of an Andres Sosa grand slam. DBU (27-11) battled back from multiple deficits in extra innings to earn their fourth walk-off win of the season.
Illinois State scored first on a fielder's choice, but the Patriots responded immediately. Jackson Glenn continued his assault on the baseball and scalded an RBI double down the left field line to tie the ballgame. Andres Sosa then ripped a ball to third base that scored another run, giving the good guys the lead.
In the second, Blayne Jones blasted his 8th HR of the season over the batters' eye in dead center field. Glenn would give DBU another insurance run in the bottom of the 5th when he launched a solo shot past the DBU bullpen in left to make it 4-2 Pats.
On the mound, Kouba turned in another quality start, going six innings while striking out seven Redbirds. Kouba allowed two runs early, but didn't surrender anything else through his six strong innings.
While Kouba pitched well, the DBU bullpen would falter in the late innings. Illinois State did come back to tie the game in the top of the 7th against the lefty Sherlin and would ultimately force the game into extras. The Redbirds would score on a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth and an RBI single into left.
In the bottom of the eighth, however, with their backs against the wall, the Patriots rallied once behind a two-run blast from Cole Moore. The home run sent the game to the ninth inning where ISU scored one more time.
Again, DBU found themselves down to their final three outs, but Patriots' fans didn't have to worry for long. DBU quickly loaded the bases and Andres Sosa blasted a grand slam over the left field wall to give DBU a dramatic win over the Redbirds.
