THE RUNDOWN
DBU dropped game two of the Columbia Super Regional to Virginia, 4-0, setting up a final game tomorrow with a trip to the College World Series on the line. DBU (41-17) got a masterful performance from Rhett Kouba, but could not get the bats going to help their starter out as the Patriots were shutout for just the second time this season.
Kouba dazzled on the hill for seven strong innings, throwing 102 pitches of scoreless baseball while striking out five. In the eighth, however, he came out and gave up a leadoff home run to the Cavaliers' Zack Gelof, putting the first run of the game on the board. Virginia would add three more later in the inning on a three-run home run by Alex Tappen to account for all scoring in the contest.
The Patriots battled at the plate all day long, but were unable to get hot against the Cavs' starter, Griff McGarry, who turned in a fantastic performance of his own. Battling a cut on his throwing hand that bothered him for much of the day, McGarry carried a no hitter into the seventh inning and fanned ten.
The Patriots and Cavaliers will now prepare for the biggest game of their seasons with the winner advancing to Omaha for the College World Series.
