THE RUNDOWN
No. 13 DBU's historic season came to an end on Monday afternoon with a 5-2 loss to Virginia in the Columbia Super Regional. In a year that was constantly defined by memorable moments, the Patriots (41-18) were unable to overcome a three-run deficit in the last two innings to fall one win shy of the College World Series.
Jackson Glenn drove in the Patriots' two runs in the third inning with a laser over the left field wall. It was the 21st home run of the season for Glenn and gave the Patriots the lead and momentum early on. The Cavaliers got a run back with a Nick Kent home run in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the lead in half.
On the mound, Luke Eldred went 3.2 innings before turning the ball over to Ray Gaither who pitched 3.0 innings of relief. Aided by web gems from Blayne Jones and Jackson Glenn, Gaither cruised into the seventh inning before Virginia finally mustered more baserunners.
The seventh would be the deciding inning as the Cavaliers loaded the bases for Kyle Teel, their hottest hitter. With two outs and a 2-2 count, Teel drove a pitch over the center field wall for a grand slam, making it 5-2 Cavs, which proved to be the deciding hit of the game.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The 2021 DBU Patriots made it farther than any other team in program history, clinching a birth to their second-ever Super Regional and finishing one win shy of the College World Series.
- The Patriots are the only active team to have won at least 40+ games in each of the last seven seasons.
- The careers of five Patriot seniors (Austin Bell, Christian Boulware, Jackson Glenn, Kragen Kechely, and Andres Sosa) that returned for their final season finishes with the deepest run in the postseason in DBU Baseball history.
