THE RUNDOWN
The No. 17 Patriots (5-1, 1-0 LSC) opened their Lone Star Conference slate with a tremendous 6-2 win over A&M-Commerce. DBU found offense from all over the pitch as five different Patriots recorded a goal against a Lions squad (2-3-1, 0-1 LSC) that allowed six scores for the first time since 2018.
Michelle Gonzalez (Marta) continued her offensive tear with a goal off a penalty kick just two minutes into the match. The penalty kick was DBU's first of the season and created Marta's third goal in the last four games. Leading 1-0, the Patriots continued to press, as Delaney Schmidt earned the 2-0 header off an assist from Summerlyn Heller just eight minutes later.Â
Heller became the first Patriot of the season to record a multi-assist game when she connected with Ashley Merrill for a header in the 17th minute. Following the goal, the deluge of offense would temporarily stop as DBU entered halftime with a 3-0 lead.Â
It was A&M-Commerce that scored first after the break. A corner kick bounced off the heads of two different Lions before finding the corner of the net to trim the deficit to 3-1.Â
The Patriots answered with another offensive blast. Merrill tallied the 21st goal of her young career off an assist from Abigail Olmos in the 63rd minute. Olmos then kept the ball herself to deliver the insurance score. Finally, Ashley Perez blasted the 6-1 strike off the foot of Melissa Jones before the Lions snuck in another score in the closing minutes. Â

COACH MICHELLE LENARD ON THE WIN
"A great start to the conference schedule. We were at home and didn't want to waste an opportunity at home. Regardless of the score, Commerce [A&M-Commerce] is a very tough opponent, and they can be very, very dangerous... Even when we got a lead in the first half, we knew we had to stay disciplined and continue to compete. They [Commerce] showed they can be dangerous when given some opportunity and scored a couple of goals. But I thought the team came together and we put the game away in the second half."Â
