No. 17 DBU Scores Five Second-Half Goals to Outduel Lady Buffs, 5-4

THE RUNDOWN
No. 17 DBU (6-1, 2-0 LSC) outdueled West Texas A&M 5-4 Saturday afternoon in Canyon, Texas. The Patriots roared to life in the second half, scoring five times in the final 45 minutes as Delaney Schmidt delivered the winning goal in a match that produced three ties and two lead changes.

The Lady Buffs (5-1, 1-1 LSC) controlled the contest through the first 15 minutes. But the DBU defense would stymie the first wave of attacks before Hannah Kelley-Lusk knifed her way through the DBU backline in the 38th and 40th minute to give WT a 2-0 lead off counter-attacks.

After logging just two shots in the first half of action, the Patriots emerged from halftime as the aggressors. DBU entered the scoring column in the 47th minute when Schmidt found a goal off assists from Summerlyn Heller and Jenna Patterson. Just one minute later, Michelle Gonzalez (Marta) tied the game at 2-2 with a deep strike that rattled in off the top of the goal post.

In the 49th minute, Kelley-Lusk finished her hat trick with an assist by Asha James as West Texas A&M recaptured the lead, 3-2. But, once again, the Patriots would rally. DBU's Abigail Olmos skipped a pass to Patterson in the 54th minute. Patterson then launched a curving kick that snuck inside the right post to tie the game at three goals apiece.

The momentum continued to swell as Madison Smalley outraced the Lady Buffs defense to score off a Melanie Castelan deep pass and give DBU its first lead of the game at 4-3. However, WT provided one final challenge as Asha Hames retied the game with 11 minutes remaining.

After scoring DBU's very first goal, Delaney Schmidt would push across the game-winner. The veteran forward recorded her second goal of the match on a Summerlyn Heller corner kick in the 85th minute.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
-Schmidt's two-goal performance surpasses Lea Sedwick for fourth-most in program history (35).
-DBU and its opponent have not combined for nine goals since an 8-1 DBU win over McMurray in 2013.
-The Patriots improve to 2-0 in road games this year.

COACH MICHELLE LENARD ON THE WIN
"That was one of the craziest games I've been a part of. We had a slow start to the first half and gave up two goals on counter-attacks. I was very pleased with the response in the second half and our continued resilience each time WT [ West Texas A&M] tied it up. WT has tremendous speed upfront and some very good players and we found a way to win."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
11 - After notching two shots in the opening half, DBU attacked the goalkeeper 11 times after halftime.
38-48 - The two squads scored four goals between the 38:00-48:00 minute mark.
90 - For the fourth time this season, Rachel Allen played every minute of the match.
