THE RUNDOWN
The DBU Men's Soccer team rolled past Texas A&M International, 5-2, Saturday night at Patriot Soccer Field. Four goals in the first half and one more in the final frame led DBU (2-3-4, 1-0 LSC) to its largest offensive outburst since 2013 and a win in the Lone Star Conference Opener.Â
Jonathan Marquez struck first in the 26th minute when he twirled past a Dustdevil defender to blast an unassisted strike under the top crossbar. However, the Patriots' 1-0 lead was not celebrated for very long before a miscommunication between the DBU back line and goalkeeper
Alexander Knepper gifted the Dustdevils (2-4-4, 0-1 LSC) an own goal that tied the game at 1-1.Â
But Coach Jobe's squad shook off the unfortunate miscue and buried TAMIU under three goals in the final five minutes of the half. The Patriots retook the lead when
Gavyn Rosales fired a pass toward a charging
Peyton Voelker. But the pass caromed off a defender and into the back of the net for an own goal courtesy of the Dustdevils. From there, the Patriot offense snowballed.Â
Mason Wallak drilled a solo strike in the 44th minute that put DBU up, 3-1, and
Peyton Voelker scored just 45 seconds later on an assist from
Luke Harris.Â
The same DBU team that dominated possession and outclassed TAMIU before halftime finished the job in the second half. Freshman
Richie Paulus matched history when he punched in DBU's fifth goal of the game on an assist from an unguarded
Zach Paclibar in the 83rd minute.
The Dustdevils scored once more in the 88th minute before the final buzzer sounded to cement the Patriots' 5-2 win.Â
