THE RUNDOWN
The Patriots (2-4-4, 1-1 LSC) dropped a hard-fought battle to No. 18 St. Mary's, 2-0, Wednesday night in San Antonio, Texas. DBU fought hard with intense physicality throughout the match but could not answer two second half goals from the Rattlers. The shutout win is St. Mary's third in a row, and the nation's top-ranked defense has now gone eight consecutive games without surrendering a goal.
Both sides battled to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes.
Alexander Knepper delivered four first-half saves that kept the game in the balance while shots from
Jonathan Marquez,
Ethan Unger, and
Bruno Correa all challenged STMU goalkeeper Andre Schlaefli. But the Rattlers took the lead in the 54th minute on a strike from Calum Murdoch.
Despite giving up the go-ahead goal, the Patriots continued to push. DBU answered immediately with a shot on goal by
Mason Wallak in the 55th minute, and the offense controlled possession for a chunk of the second half. But the Rattlers bit one final time in the last 10 minutes. In the 82nd minute, STMU doubled up the lead on a Cian Foley goal off a quick-touch pass from Andrick Ferrer.
