THE RUNDOWN
DBU bounced back in a 2-0 victory over Oklahoma Christian on Senior Night at Patriot Field. Another strong showing from the defense, coupled with a historic performance from
Peyton Voelker, led DBU (5-5-4, 4-2 LSC) to its fourth consecutive home win.
The Eagles (8-4-3, 2-3-1) outshot the Patriots 16-10 but couldn't overcome the experienced backline of
Payton Franklin and
Jonathan Leach. It was another busy shift for
Alexander Knepper, whose five saves preserved DBU's fourth clean sheet of the year. The league-leading offense of Oklahoma Christian was held in check throughout the night as tensions steadily climbed before boiling over in the second half.
Andrew Hollenbach opened the scoring column in the 63rd minute when he boomed a powerful kick to
Peyton Voelker on a set piece near midfield. Voelker grounded the ball before muscling through the rest of the Eagles' defense to become the first player in school history to score nine goals in a single season.
Clinging to the 1-0 lead, the Patriots were forced to play a man down due to a controversial red card in the 74th minute. But the outnumbered Patriots would add to their lead instead of simply protecting it. With three minutes remaining in the match, sharp passes from
Ethan Unger and
Gavyn Rosales jostled the Oklahoma Christian defense and plated another score for Voelker. Voelker then broke his own scoring record with a left-footed shot toward the bottom of the net that finalized the Eagles' fourth loss of the season.
A diving save by
Alexander Knepper with 30 seconds remaining squashed Oklahoma Christian's final attack in front of a roaring crowd at Patriot Field.
