THE RUNDOWN
DBU's comeback attempt fell just short in a 2-1 loss on the road to Midwestern State. A Gavyn Rosales goal in the 85th minute brought the Patriots back within striking distance before David Trevizo's potential game-tying goal was scooped up by MSU goalkeeper Adam Braman to end the game. Saturday's result snaps a two-game losing skid for Midwestern State (9-4-2, 3-4 LSC) and slows down a DBU squad that had won three of its last four games.Â
Offensive opportunities were scarce for DBU (5-6-4, 4-3 LSC) throughout most of the match. The Patriots mustered just one chance on frame in the first half and were outshot by Midwestern State 8-4 in shots on goal. The Mustangs opened the scoring column in the 10th minute on a right-footed shot by Brandon St. Martinez-Trelles. MSU then doubled up the score about 25 minutes into the second half on a goal from junior defender Tristian Adams. Â
Faced with a two-goal deficit, DBU continued to fight back. A red card in the 73rd minute left the Mustangs a man down as the Patriots made their move. Jonathan Marquez was awarded a free kick in the 85th minute that gave the offense room to operate and helped Gavyn Rosales punch a goal into the bottom-left corner of the net. The Patriots kept their foot on the gas for the final five minutes of the match, earning multiple set pieces that put the Mustangs on their heels and cast uncertainty over the pitch at Stang Park. But the last good look of the game would come up short as Trevizo's shot on goal was picked up by Braman before the Mustangs bled out the clock with a corner kick.Â
