DBU Women's Cross Country Team

Women's Cross Country Races to Third Straight LSC Title

THE RUNDOWN
For the third-straight season, the DBU Women's Cross Country team won the Lone Star Conference Championship.  Their team score of 33 edged out West Texas A&M, scoring 44 points for second place.  Oklahoma Christian finished in third, making the podium with 116 points.  Though WT placed second, they hold claim to the individual champion Florance Uwajeneza, winning the meet with a time of 20:50.9.

To keep the Buffaloes at bay, Madison Brown went out with the leaders and planted herself between the projected first and second finishers of WT. Her persistence early paid off as the top of the race spread apart, forcing the upper echelon to race on their own through the second loop of the course, solidifying finishing positions far before the race was over.  Brown's second place accomplishment came with a time of 21:09.6, just four seconds off her personal-best mark.  Marissa Insinna also ran the second half of the race alone, holding her position to secure fourth in 21:51.8.  Next in line was KayCee Keller, breaking away from a smaller pack to place fifth, running a 22:16.1.  Rylee Cristan crossed the finish line in 10th, fighting down the final stretch for a time of 22:37.4.  Emme O'Donnell rounded out the DBU scoring placing 12th with a time of 22:45.3, a new 6k personal record.

Completing the three-peat is a significant accomplishment for this program, one with remarkable success under Head Coach Jacob Phillips.  Since jumping into the top 10 teams in the nation, DBU has raced to its ranking.  Racing with an expectation to be a perennial team meet after meet is different from toeing the starting line with a chip on the shoulder from being neglected after great runs.  Once a team's performance is recognized, the motivation to be great must come from somewhere else.  These ladies have a purpose when they race, completing their job on the course for the sake of the team. They wake up every morning to improve on that skill, running every mile with the attention a championship team brings to the table.  The expectation for this team is to be great down the stretch and that started with the LSC Championships.  Winning it is proof they are ready to compete in December.

DBU HEAD COACH JACOB PHILLIPS ON THE TEAM'S OVERALL PERFORMANCE
"We equaled our rankings from the preseason which is always good. Obviously, we would have loved to bring home both championships, but just went up against a better team on the men's side. I'm excited about the season that we've had, but even more so about what's to come! Looking forward to Regionals and our opportunity to punch a ticket to nationals."
