THE RUNDOWN
The Patriots knocked off the Bearkats with a 4-1 win in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader. A three-spot in the fifth inning gave DBU (4-3) the offense it needed to complete the sweep of a series it never trailed. The Patriot bats out-hit Sam Houston 8-2 for a series-high four runs while
Jacob Meador and
Peyton Sherlin capped off a dominant weekend for the pitching staff.
Meador earned his second win in a DBU uniform. After escaping a bases-loaded jam to start the day, he worked 5.0 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.
The Patriots jumped out to a 1-0 lead off a solo shot from
Jace Grady in the third frame. The sophomore tattooed a two-strike pitch through left field for his second home run of the year.
The offense erupted for five hits and three runs in the home half of the fifth.
Jaxon Holder crushed the first double of his collegiate career, a powerful blast that slammed off the top of the right-field wall before falling back into play.
Blayne Jones then swapped places with Holder on an RBI double to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
Andrew Benefield ended the explosive fifth inning with a two-RBI single into left field for DBU's last runs of the day.
Peyton Sherlin made his third appearance on the mound this season. The lefty gave up a solo shot to Justin Wishkoski to put the Bearkats on the board, but carded three punchouts in 2.0 innings to preserve the win.
