DBU Women's Cross Country Team

No. 19 DBU Opens Season With Win at Orville Rogers XC Opener

THE RUNDOWN
The DBU Women's Cross Country team opened their season by putting on a clinic, sweeping the first eight places of the race for a perfect score of 15 points. Midwestern State finished second, scoring 50 points.

Madison Brown led the Patriots across the finish line, winning the race in 18:21.8, a course personal-best. Marissa Insinna took second place at 18:30.7, followed by a trio of KayCee Keller, Emme O'Donnell, and Rylee Cristan, crossing the line in 18:48.7, 18:49.3 and 18:51.9 respectively. Megan Smith secured sixth place with a 19:10.7 finish with Breanna Lipscomb not far behind at 19:29.7. Emily Cole finished her race with a time of 19:31.8, finishing eighth.

The course was kind to no one with sections compromised by the recent poor weather. Though the morning was clear, the athletes looked like they were racing in a mid-November slog just one mile in. The times reflect the poor conditions of mud, marsh and pooled water, but racing a weather-torn course may be just what DBU needs to climb the ranks later in the season. This year's South Central Regional Championships are being hosted in Denver, CO. When the race was hosted there in 2018, the weather ruined the course and heavily favored the experienced teams in tough racing conditions.

JACOB PHILLIPS ON THE FIRST MEET OF THE SEASON
"Today was great and so fun! We had a lot of support out there on our home course and our team responded to that! These teams have the ability to be the best we've ever fielded, but there is a lot of work to do between now and the Championship season."

UP NEXT
DBU will return to Lynn Creek Park to race their B-Squad at the Gerald Richie Invitational next weekend, September 10.
