THE RUNDOWNÂ
The DBU Men's Soccer Team clinched their spot into the Lone Star Conference tournament after a 5-1 win over Oklahoma Christian in Edmond, Oklahoma, on Wednesday. The Patriots dominated the scoreboard in the final 51 minutes, and three goals in the second half led them to their largest win margin of the season. Â
Oklahoma Christian made the first goal of the night in the 15th minute when Lawson Ford's shot found the back of the net. The Patriots continued to fight for possession and finally broke through the defensive line in the 39th minute when freshman Evan Pustejovsky was assisted by Gavyn Rosales to bring the score to a 1-1 tie. Less than a minute later, the Patriots scored again, this time by Peyton Voelker, also assisted by Gavyn Rosales. Within a matter of seconds, DBU was up by one going into halftime. Â
The second half showcased the Patriot's relentlessness as they scored three more goals. In the 54th minute, Peyton Voelker assisted Gavyn Rosales in scoring a goal of his own to increase their lead to two over the Eagles. Rosales did not stop there, scoring a second goal in the 67th minute, again with the help of Voelker. Then the Patriots, in the final two minutes, sealed the deal after Cody Tice controlled the ball from center field all the way to the 18-yard box to score the DBU's fifth goal of the night, bringing the final score to 5-1 in favor of the Patriots. HEAD COACH JESS JOBE ON THE WIN AND ADVANCEMENT TO THE LSC TOURNAMENTÂ
"First, incredibly proud of the effort tonight, especially under the circumstance when we face an early goal and go down. There a lot of reasons to put our head down and doubt the game plan, doubt ourselves, and doubt whether or not everything is gonna come together for us. We showed an incredible amount of resilience and relentlessness to just carry on and push on and believe that we can get the next goal, and then turn that into two. It was the perfect response late in the half, and I think it just absolutely shifted the momentum. Some changes were made and the guys responded very well and carried out the task. We are just proud of the overall effort and we couldn't just say enough about the mentality that was necessary for us to be able to flip the game on its head in the way that we did. We felt really confident about going in and focusing on our results and we feel incredibly grateful and fortunate that some of the results fell the way they did to give us the opportunity to host. We are celebrating tonight and we are excited for what's ahead. We have proved a lot to ourselves in the last couple of weeks. We are playing some really good soccer at just the right time and we hope we will continue and continue to push on as a group. We will celebrate tonight but focus on the next one tomorrow and get ready to go on Saturday."Â
